Excavation and grading in Powell

Powell is a community in north Knox County, between Knoxville and the Anderson County line. It has older homes on bigger lots, new subdivisions and some open land. We do drainage, grading, footers, trenching and site prep across the area.

Ridges, creeks and sinkholes

Powell sits in the Ridge and Valley ground that covers Knox County. Ridges run northeast to southwest with low ground between them, and Beaver Creek winds through the valley. Low lots near the creek can hold water and flood in heavy rain.

North Knox County also has limestone under the red clay, and sinkholes are common in places. A sinkhole or low spot in a yard is not something to just fill with dirt and forget. We look at it when we walk the property and talk with you about the right way to grade around it.

New subdivisions next to older homes

Powell has grown, and new subdivisions now sit beside homes that have been there for decades. New building changes how water moves across the land around it. Some older lots that never had a problem now get runoff they did not get before.

For older homes, we fix yards that hold water, regrade around foundations and dig trenches for drain lines. For new builds and additions, we do site prep, footers and rough and final grade so the yard is ready to finish.

Bigger lots and open ground

Many Powell homes sit on an acre or more. That leaves room for a garden, a shop or a pasture, and also room for brush to take over. Bush hogging and land clean-up keep the back of the property usable, and our augers handle post holes for fencing.

Permits in Powell

Powell is not its own city. Most of it is unincorporated Knox County, so permits usually go through Knox County. Some addresses fall inside Knoxville city limits instead. Check which applies to your lot, and call Tennessee 811 before any digging.

Common questions

There is a sinkhole in my yard. Can you fill it?

We will look at it first. Filling a sinkhole the wrong way can make it worse or send water somewhere new. Knox County may also have rules about it. We will tell you what we see and what we can and cannot do.

Can you dig post holes for a fence?

Yes. The Vermeer mini skid steer runs 10 inch and 24 inch augers, which handle fence posts and footing holes. Rock can slow things down, so we look at the ground first.
