Knox County

Excavation and grading in Knoxville

Knoxville sits in the valley where the Holston and French Broad rivers meet to form the Tennessee River. The ground here runs from flat creek bottoms to steep ridge sides, often on the same street. We do footers, grading, drainage and site prep across the city and the rest of Knox County.

What the ground is like

Knoxville is in the Ridge and Valley part of East Tennessee. Long ridges run northeast to southwest, with valleys and creeks between them. Most yards are on red clay. It packs hard when dry and turns slick and heavy when wet.

Much of Knox County sits on limestone. That means rock can show up shallow in one spot and deep a few feet away, and sinkholes are part of the landscape in some areas. We look for low spots and signs of rock when we walk the property, so the plan fits the ground you actually have.

Work we see most in the city

Knoxville has a lot of older homes on small lots. Many were built before anyone paid much attention to where the water goes. Common calls are wet crawl spaces, water running toward the foundation, washed out gravel drives and yards that hold water after every storm.

There is also steady infill building, where an old house comes down and a new one goes up on the same lot. That job usually means demolition and clean-up, then footers, then rough and final grade once the house is built. Our mini excavator and skid steers fit on tight city lots where a big machine would tear up more than it fixes.

Lots near the river and the creeks

Fort Loudoun Lake runs along the Tennessee River through Knoxville, and many creeks feed it. Low lots near water stay wet longer, and soft ground changes how and when we can work. On these lots, grading and drainage need to send water away from the house without dumping it on a neighbor.

Permits in Knoxville

Inside city limits, check with the City of Knoxville about permits for grading, demolition and new building. Outside city limits, check with Knox County. Some work near streams or on large disturbed areas has extra rules. Ask before the job starts, and call Tennessee 811 before any digging.

Common questions

Can you work on a small city lot?

Yes. Our Caterpillar 305 mini excavator and the Vermeer mini skid steer are built for tight spaces. We look at gates, fences, slopes and where we can park the trailer when we walk the lot.

My crawl space gets wet. Can grading help?

Often it can. If the ground slopes toward the house, water ends up underneath it. We can regrade so the yard slopes away and add drainage where water collects. We will tell you what we see when we walk it.
